Mariazell
Mariazell - an Austrian city in the southeastern state of Styria. Well known as the center of winter sports and the place of pilgrimage, it is located 143 km (89 miles) north of Graz. It is picturesquely located in the Valley of Salza, between the northern Alps of Styria. The most famous decoration of the city is the Basilica of Mariazel, It is the most important place of pilgrimage in Austria and one of the most visited shrines in Europe. The church worships a miraculous wooden image of the Virgin Mary. Pope Pius X on November 10, 1907. Motu proprio personally elevated the shrine to the status of a small basilica.
The coin was issued to commemorate the 850th anniversary of asias Mariazell. On the obverse of the coin is depicted the Basilica of Mariazel, next to it is the inscription of the year 1157-2007. The official side of the nine-sided coin depicts the shields of the nine Austrian provinces of Feeral and the denomination of 5 euros.
