Austria 2005 5 euro The European Anthem - Ludwig Van Beethoven BU
The European Anthem - Ludwig Van Beethoven
"Anthem of Europe"
is the anthem of both the European Union and Council of Europe. It is used to
represent both the European Union and the whole of Europe; its purpose is to
honour shared European values. The EU describes it as expressing the ideals of
freedom, peace and solidarity.
Obverse: The numeral “5” is
encircled by the heraldic shields of Austria’s nine federal states (Burgenland,
Carinthia, Lower Austria, Upper Austria, Salzburg, Styria, Tyrol, Vorarlberg,
and Vienna). The inscription REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH wraps around the rim. EURO is
centered between two dots at the bottom. This design remains constant for all
Austrian 5 euro silver coins struck to date. The reverse side of the coin shows the old Kärntnertor Theatre
("Theatre at the Carinthian Gate" which stood near the present Opera
House until 1870). It was here that Beethoven's 9th symphony with the "Ode
to Joy" was first publidly performed. The opening notes of the melody in
the symphony itself and a cameo portrait of Beethoven complete the design.
