Monuments Oviedo and the Kingdom of Asturias
The eighth coin of the series "World
Heritage List of UNESCO" is dedicated to the Monuments of Oviedo and the
Kingdom of Asturias. Oviedox is the capital city of the Principality of
Asturias in northern Spain and the administrative and commercial centre of the
region.
The design depicts the Church of Santa Maria
del Naranco, a Roman Catholic Asturian pre-Romanesque Asturian architecture
church. Ramiro I of Asturias ordered it to be built as a royal palace as part
of a larger complex that also incorporated the nearby church of San Miguel de
Lillo, 100 meters away. It was completed in 848. It was declared a World
Heritage Site by UNESCO in December 1985.
The central area of the coin reproduces an
image of the church of Santa Maria del Naranco. At the top and capitalizated
the issuign country SPAIN. Below the year of issue 2017 and to the left of the
central motif the mintmark.
