The Baltic culture

The Balts, the Aishis are the tribes of northeastern Europe who spoke the Baltic languages of the Indo-European language family, derived from the Baltic proto-language. To this day, only Lithuanian and Latvian languages have survived from the Baltic languages. The term "Balts" was proposed by the German linguist Georg Heinrich Ferdinand Nesselmann (G. H. F. Nesselmann) in his 1845 book Die Sprache der alten Preußen an ihren Überresten erläutert and used to name a group of related languages near the Baltic Sea.

The design shows an amber disc, one of the most characteristic symbols of the Baltic culture. The disc is decorated with a crosspiece of drilled dots — an ornament symbolising the world’s axis. At the top is the name of the issuing country ‘LIETUVA’, flanked by the mint mark and the year of issuance ‘2016’. The coin’s outer ring bears the 12 stars of the European Union.
