Germany 2008 Federal state of Hamburg (Any random Mint)
Federal state of
Hamburg
One of Germany's 16
federated states, Hamburg is surrounded by Schleswig-Holstein to the north and
Lower Saxony to the south. The official name reflects Hamburg's history as a
member of the medieval Hanseatic League and a free imperial city of the Holy
Roman Empire. Hamburg is the second-largest city in Germany after Berlin, as well as the
overall 7th largest city and largest non-capital city in the European Union with a population of
over 1.85 million. Hamburg is Europe's third largest port, after Rotterdam and Antwerp.
The coin depicts the baroque church of St. Michaelis, or “Michel” as it is popularly known. It is a symbol of the city and federal state of Hamburg, as the inscription below the image indicates. The year of issue, 2008, the 12 stars of the European Union and the words ‘BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND’ appear on the outer ring. The mintmark is shown in the upper right part of the coin.
