A Partial Collar minting error occurs when a coin’s planchet is only partially seated within the collar die – the ring that normally holds the blank in place during striking and forms the coin’s edge. In this case, the collar die malfunctions or fails to engage properly.

As a result, one side of the coin’s edge appears normal (with a rim or reeding), while the other side is expanded, often misshaped or lacking an edge altogether.

The error often produces an uneven edge, with a portion showing reeding or a smooth edge that is partially formed.

This type of mint error usually occurs due to mechanical issues in the minting press – such as a misaligned, worn-out collar die, improperly placed planchet, or even excessive striking pressure.

Euro coins are minted under highly controlled conditions, so Partial Collar errors are relatively rare, especially in high grades like MS64 or better.
