Belgium 2021 75 Years of Blake and Mortimer Colour BU in Coincard
75 Years of Blake and Mortimer
Captain
Francis Blake and Professor Philip Mortimer are the creation of Edgar P.
Jacobs. The comic first appeared in the Belgian cartoon magazine Tintin in 1946. In the Netherlands, the stories were
published regularly in Kuifje
Weekblad from
1946 and in Pep/Sjors from 1964. The series follows the adventures of
the friends Professor Philip Mortimer and Captain Francis Blake, a spy at MI5.
Although the comic is named after both characters, Professor Philip Mortimer is
the main protagonist. Mortimer is the one who often gets into difficult
situations, after which he gets help from his friend Captain Francis Blake. The
stories are set from the 1940s to the early 1960s.
The
Royal Mint of Belgium celebrates the 75th anniversary of the iconic cartoon characters
with a 5 euro coin that is issued in two editions: in relief and in colour.
Both coins feature the portrait of both comic book heroes on the front.
Professor Philip Mortimer has his characteristic pipe in his mouth and Captain
Francis Blake has his equally characteristic kepi on his head. The 5 euro coin
in colour shows the duo in the original colours from the first album and is
packed in a completely different coincard. This makes the difference between
the two 5 euro coins even bigger, making it very tempting to order both versions.
