Australia 2018 Koala & Baby 2 oz
Koala and Baby
The
koala is a largely sedentary species of marsupial that can spend as many as 20
hours each day sleeping. The creatures live in eucalypt woodlands throughout
the continent of Australia, with the leaves of the tree forming the backbone of
its diet. This beloved creature in Australia has been saved from the brink of
extinction in the early 20 century and now has a vulnerable status, the
least concern among “threatened” species.
On the reverse is the image of a
mother koala as it moves along a sturdy branch in a eucalyptus tree with its
young baby on its back. When baby koalas are born they weigh less than a ½ gram
and cannot see or hear. The keen sense of smell and strong forelimbs of newborn
joeys does allow them to climb to their mother’s pouch for safety immediately
after birth.
The obverse of the 2018 2 oz Silver Australian Mother
& Baby Koala coin includes the right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth
II. Her Majesty is the longest-reigning monarch in British history, surpassing
the 63-year rule of her great-grandmother Queen Victoria I in 2015. This is the
fourth-generation design created for the Royal Mint of England in 1998 by Ian
Rank-Broadley.
