During the opening clashes on 1 July 1863, Confederacy troops took the early initiative north of Gettysburg, forcing the Union side to form a defensive line on high ground to the south of the town. Full-scale battle began on the second day, but the attack by the Confederacy was only partially successful in dislodging Union defenders from their positions.
