France 2018 Simone Veil
Simone Veil
The design shows a portrait of Simone Veil, a leading figure
in the fight for women's rights. Simone Veil, born as Jacob, died in June 2017
at the age of 89 years. She survived the deportation to Auschwitz and became
one of the most important figures in the construction of Europe. From 1979 to
1982 she was the first elected President of the European Parliament. She stands
for the legalization of abortion, for which she campaigned and which was
decided in 1975 by a law named after her. Since 2008 she has been a member of the
Académie française. Her prisoner number appears on her collar. The European
Parliament is depicted in the background with its name, the year of birth and
death, the country name "RF", the issue year "2018" and the
mint mark. On the outer coin ring the twelve stars of the European flag
are shown.
