Tove Marika Jansson (9 August 1914 – 27 June 2001) was a Swedish-speaking Finnish author, novelist, painter, illustrator and comic strip author. Brought up by artistic parents, Jansson studied
art from 1930 to 1938 in Stockholm, Helsinki and Paris. Her first solo art exhibition was in 1943.
Jansson is principally known as the author of the
Moomin books. Jansson created the Moomins, a family of trolls who are white, round and smooth in
appearance, with large snouts that make them vaguely resemble hippopotamuses.
The
inner part of the coin depicts Tove Jansson’s portrait. Under the portrait the
signature ‘Tove Jansson’ and the years ‘1914-2001’. At the left the indication
of the issuing country ‘FI’. At the right the year of issuance ‘2014’ and the
mint mark. The coin’s outer ring bears the 12 stars of the European Union.
