Rita Levi Montalcini was an Italian neurologist and researcher. She was the first Italian woman to win the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1986, along with American biochemist Stanley Cohen, for their discoveries on the nervous growth factor.
The discovery of the nerve growth factor had a significant impact on the understanding of neurological diseases and opened new avenues for research on cancer and tissue regeneration. Rita Levi Montalcini continued to work in medical research until her death at the age of 103.
