The Carnation Revolution, also known as the 25 April, was a 1974 military coup in Lisbon that ousted the authoritarian Estado Novo regime, leading to significant changes in Portugal and its colonies. The coup, organized by the Armed Forces Movement (MFA), initially aimed at regime change but evolved into a popular civil resistance. It resulted in negotiations with African independence movements, Portuguese troop withdrawals, and the independence of several African nations and East Timor. The revolution, marked by minimal violence and symbolic carnations, ushered in democracy and is commemorated annually in Portugal on 25 April, known as Freedom Day.

Depicts a central carnation symbolizing the revolution, encircled by dynamic rings, conveying the idea that people's actions and beliefs may evolve while remaining rooted in the revolution's principles. Surrounding the image are the words "This is the dawn I have been waiting for," excerpted from the poem "O Nome das Coisas" by poet 'Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen'. Positioned at the bottom are the national coat of arms, the country name "Portugal," and the dates "04/25/1974_2024." In the upper left corner, the designer's name and mint mark (abbreviated) are displayed. The twelve stars of the European Union surround the design on the outer ring.

The Carnation Revolution got its name from the fact that almost no shots were fired and from restaurant worker Celeste Caeiro offering carnations to the soldiers when the population took to the streets to celebrate the end of the dictatorship, with other demonstrators following suit and carnations placed in the muzzles of guns and on the soldiers' uniforms.
Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen (1919–2004) was a Portuguese poet and writer. Her remains have been entombed in the National Pantheon since 2014.
