This coin is dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the death of Antonio Canova.
Antonio Canova was an Italian sculptor and
painter, considered the greatest exponent of Neoclassicism in sculpture. Canova had prestigious clients, from the Habsburgs
to the Bourbons, from the papal court to Napoleon, up to the Venetian, Roman
and Russian nobility. Among his most famous works are Amore e Psiche, Teseo sul
Minotauro, Adonis and Venus, Ebe and Le tre Grazie.
The coin depicts the sculpture of the
goddess Hebe, which Canova made between 1796 and 1817 in four copies now
preserved in Berlin, Saint Petersburg, Chatsworth and Forlì.
