maritime traveler and discoverer Fernand Magellan, commemorating his
anniversary of his 500th expedition around the Earth. In 1519-1522, the
expedition launched by Magellan was the first to sail the Earth, the first to
cross the South American Strait, linking South America with the Pacific Ocean,
the first to take Asia and Africa to the west and return to Spain. The Magellan
Expedition confirmed that the Earth is round.
