Pope Benedict XVI (on
16 April 1927) is a retired prelate of the Catholic church who served as the
head of the church and the sovereign of the Vatican City
State from
2005 until his resignation in 2013. Benedict's election as pope
occurred in the 2005
papal conclave that
followed the death of Pope John Paul
II.
Benedict has chosen to be known by the title "pope
emeritus"
upon his resignation.
The inner part of the coin
features the profile of His Holiness Benedict XVI facing the left. The legend
‘BENEDICTI XVI P.M. AETATIS ANNO LXXX CITTA' DEL VATICANO’ is engraved along
the outer edge of the inner part of the coin. To the left of the effigy are the
mintmark, ‘R’, the year of issue, ‘2007’, and the initials of the engraver,
‘M.C.C. INC.’, while the artist’s name, ‘LONGO’, is inscribed on the right. The
outer ring of the coin bears the 12 stars of the European Union.
