Germany 2023 1275th birth anniversary of Charlemagne (any random mint) colored
The coin is dedicated to the legend of King Charlemagne.
He was King of the Franks, Lombards, and Bavaria, and Emperor of the West in the late eighth and early ninth centuries. The founder of the Carolingian Empire, the “Father of Europe” (Pater Europae), for the first time after the fall of the Roman Empire, united most of Western and Central Europe. As sole ruler, he continued his father’s policy of protecting the papacy and became its sole protector, removing the Lombards from power in northern Italy and leading an invasion of Muslim Spain. He also campaigned against the Saxons in the east, converting them to Christianity (under threat of death), leading to events such as the massacre at Verdun. He reached the peak of his power in 800 when he was crowned Emperor of the Romans by Pope Leo III on Christmas Day in the old St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. Charlemagne was venerated as a saint in the Holy Roman Empire and some other places after the twelfth century. His beatification has been recognized as a confirmed cult and is celebrated on 28 January.
