Austria 2006 5 euro EU Presidency BU
EU Presidency
The
presidency of the Council of the European Union is responsible for the functioning
of the Council of the European Union, which is the co-legislator of the EU
legislature alongside the European Parliament. It rotates among the member
states of the EU every six months. The presidency is not an individual, but
rather the position is held by a national government. It is sometimes
incorrectly referred to as the "president of the European Union".
Obverse: The numeral “5” is encircled by the heraldic shields of Austria’s nine federal states (Burgenland, Carinthia, Lower Austria, Upper Austria, Salzburg, Styria, Tyrol, Vorarlberg, and Vienna). The inscription REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH wraps around the rim. EURO is centered between two dots at the bottom. This design remains constant for all Austrian 5 euro silver coins struck to date. The reverse side of the silver coin shows the Vienna Hofburg in the square called the "Josefsplatz" after the equestrian statue of Joseph II in its centre. The wing of the Hofburg to the right contains the Spanish Riding School and the so-called "Redoutensäle", which will be the venue for many of the meetings and conferences during the Austrian presidency.
