On 18
June 2015 it will be exactly 200 years ago that the Battle of Waterloo took
place. In honor of this, the Ministry of Finance is issuing a new commemorative
coin, minted by the Royal Dutch Mint. One
of the most famous battles in our national history is the Battle of Waterloo.
This took place on 18 June 1815 near the Belgian village of Waterloo. The
warring parties were the army of the French Emperor Napoleon and the Allied
armies of Great Britain, Prussia, Hanover and the Netherlands.
On the
obverse of the coin is a portrait of King Willem-Alexander, made up of 2D
surfaces. The reverse shows a stitch, the characteristic headgear with which
the Prince of Orange (later King Willem II) is depictedin the famous painting by J.W. Pieneman from
1824.
King Willem-Alexander looks ahead, into the
future and the downside is a look back. This is how the coin brings past and
present together. As it were, there are two monarchs depicted on one coin;
Willem-Alexander and (the sting of) the Prince of Orange. The typography on the
front and back are beautifully intertwined: Waterloo on the reverse fills in
the open space of the letters on the front and with the value indication euro
is divided into two parts, making EU separate.
