Dimitris Mitropoulus

Dimitris Mitropoulos was born in Athens on March 1, 1896 and died in Milan on November 2, 1960. He is one of the most prestigious conductors of the twentieth century and possessed a photographic memory that allowed him to direct without score. He did not use baton, but grandiloquent gestures. Fervent devotee of the Greek Orthodox Church, he led an ascetic and monastic life. He died of a heart attack while rehearsing Mahler's Third Symphony in Milan. In his honor the Contest Dmitri Mitropoulos was established for conductors of orchestra.

The coin depicts a portrait of Dimitris Mitropoulos superimposed on a background of musical notes. The legend "120 YEARS OF THE BIRTH OF DIMITRI MITROPOULOS" inscribed on the left inner edge, as well as the text "HELENIC REPUBLIC", in Greek. The year of issues, the Anthemion flower (symbol of the Greek Mint) and the mintmark of the artist are also present.
