75th Anniversary of Grossglockner High Alpine Road

Celebrating 75 years of engineering wonder the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, this 5 euro silver coin is something of a little marvel itself. Not only does it brilliantly depict one of Austria’s main tourist attractions but also cleverly portrays motoring through the ages.

Nearly 50 kilometres long and reaching a height of over 2,500 metres above sea level, the vertiginous road, constructed in the first half of the 1930s, skirts Austria’s highest peak, the Grossglockner. It features 67 bridges and 36 hairpin bends, two of which are depicted on the reverse of the coin. A 1935 Audi Roadster and a modern convertible, representing three quarters of a century of motoring on the road, negotiate them as an eagle soars high above. The obverse of the nine-sided coin bears the standard 5 euro design with the denomination encircled by the shields of the nine federal states of Austria. The inscription “Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse 1935-2010” is found in the top right quadrant.
