25th Mother Teresa of Calcutta

Mother Teresa was an Indian nun and missionary. She became known worldwide for her work with the poor, homeless, sick and dying, for which she received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979.

When Pope John Paul II beatified Mother Teresa of Calcutta in Rome on 19 October 2003, World Mission Sunday, he called her "one of the greatest missionaries of the 20th century". She had heard in Jesus' saying on the cross "I thirst" (Jn 19:28) an "expression of God's deep longing for man" and satisfied this longing by going into the whole world to give the riches of God's love to the poorest of the poor.

To love and be loved:

"There are many people in the world who hunger for a piece of bread, but even more who long for a little love." In this she recognises one of the greatest unmet needs of the present day, pointing out that "the greatest poverty of men is not to know Christ" because he is the love of God. The meaning of life is "to love and to be loved". Thus she is an ardent example to many Christians.

In 1997 at the age of 87 the earthly life of Mother Teresa of Calcutta came to an end. The Vatican State Mint dedicates its two euro coin, a dual brilliant uncirculated and proof version, to her life and work. Our artist Orietta Rossi features on the reverse of the coin Mother Teresa holding an Indian child in her arms, looking at him with a maternal expression. This moving image reflects all the love, commitment and dedication that Mother Teresa offered to alleviate the suffering of the “poorest of the poor.
