Federal state of Bavaria

Bavaria officially the Free State of Bavaria is a state in the south-east of Germany. With an area of 70,550.19 km2 ,Bavaria is the largest German state by land area, comprising roughly a fifth of the total land area of Germany. With over 13 million inhabitants, it is second in population only to North Rhine-Westphalia, but due to its large size its population density is below the German average. Bavaria's main cities are Munich (its capital and largest city and also the third largest city in Germany), Nuremberg, and Augsburg.

The inner part of the coin, designed by Erich Ott, depicts one of Bavaria’s most famous landmarks, Neuschwanstein Castle, viewed from the east, with the gatehouse in the foreground, the romantic towers and turrets of the castle itself, and the majestic mountains behind. Beneath is the name of the federal state “BAYERN”. To the right is the mintmark of the respective mint (A, D, F, G or J) and to the left are the initials of the designer. The outer ring features the 12 stars of the European Union with a “D” at the top and “2012” at the bottom, denoting the country and year of issue respectively.

Five coins of different mints - A, D, F, G, J:

·        2022 A (Berlin mint Staatliche Münze Berlin)

·        2022 D (Munich mint Bavarian State Mint)

·        2022 F (Staatliche mint Staatliche Münzen Baden-Württemberg) *

·        2022 G (Karlsruhe mint Staatliche Münzen Baden-Württemberg) *

·        2022 J (Hamburg mint Hamburgische Münze)

*The mint was founded in 1998 as a result of the merger of the Karlsruhe and Stuttgart Mints. Despite the merger, two previously separate mints had retained their respective mintmarks: "F" – "Stuttgart" and "G" – "Karlsruhe".
